What Would It Be Like?
One of the common misunderstandings of the law of attraction, and change in general, is the belief that simply having more positive thoughts or enough positive affirmations, or having enough desire will result in the desired things being attracted into one’s life. This is an oversimplification that in many cases, I’ve found can actually keep a person stuck. For something to be attracted purposefully, every aspect of one’s being must be in alignment with the feeling or vibration of the desired change – mind (conscious and subconscious) and body (physical and energetic). For this to occur, one needs to feel, imagine and sense in every way something as if it is already happened – any aspect of one’s thoughts, feelings, attitude, unconscious beliefs that are incongruent with the new state could interfere or keep you stuck. In fact, what many people do when they attempt to manifest (whether it’s through intention exercises, prayer or otherwise) is that they focus on a feeling of wanting which only reinforces that state of not having (i.e. you can only want something if you don’t have it), versus giving energy and attention to the state of already having it. To be clear, the thought and feeling of wanting something – financing for your startup company, a mutual respectful relationship, a satisfying job, more money etc. will only reinforce the current state of not having it. The ONLY way to attract something is to already “be” fully in the energetic state as if one already has it. The physical manifestation of something only occurs after it has been created energetically (e.g. with clear thoughts, emotions, beliefs).
Mahatma Gandhi, the famous leader of India’s non-violent independence movement, said:
“We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.”
This was later simplified into the often quoted phrase, ”Be the change you wish to see in the world.” What Gandhi was trying to reveal was a profound spiritual truth that what we see in the world is no more and no less a reflection of what is unseen inside of ourselves.
This may now seem daunting but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, I believe in just 5 minutes a day of play you will change your life – literally you could “play” this as a game with yourself, your kids, your spouse etc..…and the longer you do it the greater and faster the effect will be.
And in some ways it simplifies life a lot – what you will find if you truly observe the world, is that there are many many examples of people who are not very smart, or who don’t work hard for what they get, or who aren’t ethical etc. but who get exactly what they want even when others who seem more deserving, do not. This is because all those things (contrary to what we are generally taught) really do not matter when it comes to translating ideas into physical matter – all that really matters is whether you feel that you fully deserve it on the inside and then the seemingly external matrix responds. This is the Law of Attraction.
So here is what I do:
Choose something you’re inspired or intuitively pulled to affect or change – a relationship with someone like a coworker, family member, or spouse; physical health – perhaps you’ve experienced an injury or become sick…or perhaps you feel like having better teeth; living circumstances, more resources, free time etc. – the list is endless and I’ve provided a list of some concepts I’ve played with later in this article;
Set a timer for 5 minutes;
Lie down flat on your back, or any comfortable position, ideally where your spine is straight and get comfortable allowing your entire body to relax head to toe;
Bring your awareness to your heart, imagining your breath flowing in and out of your heart area finding a comfortable rhythm; then allow your awareness to expand deeper and more fully inside of you;
Ask yourself the question, “what would it be like if [insert what you chose in step 1]?”;
Let go and allow your body, emotions, energy and mind to shift and move in response to the question from your mind and allow your mind to just watch what happens – to see the images that show up and to observe the sensations that occur. Keep gently asking the question and allowing all parts inside of yourself to shift in response to the question and enjoy the process. If you allow it to just happen and let your soul guide the process with your mind as the witness you’ll likely be surprised by what happens – your body may make physical movements, emotions may be released, a sense of cells changing in your body and any number of sensations and perceptions. Just go with it and don’t try to manage it; and
When the 5 minutes is up, or you’ve allowed the process to naturally end, then do something to symbolically “lock” the effect in. You could give thanks and bow, make the sign of the cross, say “so be it” or whatever works for you before you transition back into your physical surroundings.
I like to do this first thing in the early morning when I’m still in that fuzzy state between dreams and waking and sometimes before bedtime when my subconscious can continue the process through the night. Below are a few “what would it be like” questions I’ve used.
“What would it be like [insert bullet below]”
For my body to be 10% more functional?
For my body, mind and spirit to be 100% aligned?
To be with my optimal life partner [spiritual partner, soul mate etc.]?
For my company to raise $xx in financing or more, by xx?
To have the resources to save the planet and humanity?
To have perfectly healthy gums [teeth, digestion, skin etc.]?
To have 10% more energy?
To be able to know the truth of anything?
To feel loved deeply, fully, completely unconditionally?
To be completely satisfied [fulfilled, at peace, joyful etc.] all the time?
To live without ego?
To not ever need to be understood?
To not ever need to be right?
To always have enough energy?
To have deep, full sleeps every night where I wake rested and energized?
To remember my dreams?
To be connected to God [Source, Creator etc.] all the time?
To feel worthy [insert any of the above]?
Tips:
Pay attention to areas of tension – areas where you feel a gripping sensation inside - bring them closer (note: the tendency is to want to move one’s awareness away from the feeling, and it’s this resistance that paradoxically holds it in place – bring the feeling in closer to your core and if you can bring it into a feeling of love [truth, God, Source etc.] it will often dissolve or transmute). These represent areas of resistance in your mind and/or body that would otherwise prevent the desired shift to occur.
Feel for areas inside you where you feel wanting, often in your heart or your pelvis; find the edge of the feeling and surrender it for freedom...for possibility…for love. You should feel a sense of expansion.
This goes deeper than your traditional visualization exercise which is often directed by the mind/ego. If you find that your mind attempts to create external scenarios in response to the question, that is ok, allow it but also allow your awareness to sink below through the mind and through the body to wherever your attention is pulled.
This is a conversation between your mind and your soul and when the soul and other parts of yourself respond in the form of internal energetic shifts and a variety of sensations, the mind should be listening and observing. For example, if you ask, “what would it be like to have all the money I need?” you might feel tension in your chest release, your pelvis become more compact and grounded; you might feel yourself fill up with a sense of self-worth, confidence and a feeling that everything is easy, light and fun without a care in the world. You’ll find there are many associations to money that exist for you and many little shifts in thoughts, feelings and energy that occur when you feel like you have a sense of abundance versus scarcity. Note that everyone is different and so what you feel will be unique and likely even be a little different each time you do the exercise.
